Military Dream Week: Surprising Those Who Served

During Military Dream Week, 13News Now, teamed up with a number of local Virginia based sponsors to help those in need. Individuals in the military sacrifice months, days, and years to defend our country. In a partnership with ADS Inc., the City of Norfolk’s Naval Station Norfolk Centennial Commission, Cavalier Ford Lincoln, and Virginia Ship Repair Association, they honored those who serve. Operation Once In A Lifetime assisted 13News Now to find local stories. In addition, the Now Daybreak team helped with surprise parties, gifts, and money for military families who lost loved ones.

On September 20, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. In 85 years, it was the toughest storm to hit Puerto Rico. During Military Dream Week, 13News Now, stunned a father and son survivor. The father, Carlos, is part of the Navy. His son was in Puerto Rico when the storm made landfall. They were given $1,000 to jump-start their new journey.

Lauren, an army reserves veteran, was given $2,500 to help with holiday and vehicle repairs. She did not have a reliable vehicle. It needed rotors, tires, and new brakes. She served a total of 9 years in the army reserves, and is planning to go back to school. She received $1,000 from Cavalier Ford Partners, $1,000 for car repairs, and $500 for the upcoming holiday.

Destiny, a newly expecting mother, was surprised with a baby shower and $1,000. Her husband, Christopher, is in the Navy. Destiny’s friend, Rachel, called in to 13News Now. With a thanks to the City of Norfolk, she now has extra money to spend on their unborn child.

In 2017, 3 major hurricanes slammed the United States. Americas Navy gave a helping hand. Tyler, a local sailor, was with his wife, son, and daughter. They were shopping at a local mall. 13News Now caught up to them. After reading their story, 13NewsNow paid for their vacation to Florida.

All of these surprises are to acknowledge those who have served. They could be veterans, first-responders, and/or the nation’s military heroes. Military Dream Week is a series of stories throughout the week of Thanksgiving. This year, ADS was the proud sponsor of the 13News Now and Once In A Lifetime program.
